Adjustable Pallet Racking (APR)

This storage system is one of the most commonly used palletised storage. It is consist of end frames and horizontal beams that their height can be adjust to suit the height of the pallet loads the need to be store. It is actually used for flat pallet but there are accessories that enable to store some particular type of unit load. APR is very ideal for any combined storage and order picking areas, APR can go up to 8M high.

Advantages

  • Inexpensive

  • Easily installed and flexible

  • Beam height is adjustable and could be dismantled and moved

  • Have to increase storage efficiency while maximising cost effectiveness

  • Damaged part can be easily replaced

  • Simple positive location recording can be used

  • low set up and equipment cost

Disadvantage

  • Fork truck give access to only 2 rows of racking

  • Poor utilisation of building space

  • For 8M racking height, chemically treated flat floor is needed

If I not wrong, the storage system that is used in Ikea Tampines (level 1) is this system wor.. hee hee..

Double Deep Pallet Racking

If you are looking for some other alternatives that is a bit similar like APR. you can consider double deep pallet racking. This racking system can used double deep reach trucks that the legs can fit into the structure. Bottom pallets are not left on the floor but rather supported on the beams. This system is very suitable fir line items having at least 2 pallets-worth of stock. It is quite popular in cold-room application and space that are limited.

Advantages

  • Better space utilisation than APR

  • Ehanced space utiliasation

Disadvantages

  • Some of the random access will be lost

  • Need to have double reach trucks

  • Loss of absolute FIFO

  • Poor visibility for truck drivers
